Parentheses within the paragraph are used by this transcriber to add information to clarify an entry, or to record additional information written by the original lister. A question mark (?) is used for letter/letters that cannot be read because of the quality of the document. The transcriber has used a circumflex (^) to indicate missing letters in a name or word. The original recorder showed this by writing the final letter/letters smaller and raising them above the line. An example would be W^m for William. The Captain's statement and the Physician's statement at the beginning of the document are sample ones. Usually these pages were inserted between each manifest page and were signed and filled in for that particular manifest page. "SI" is used to indicate a passenger who was held for Special Inquiry. These pages of hearings are Page 21 in this transcription and record the outcome of the hearings. At times, there are numbers listed in the entry, generally above the occupation column.
