I, Nicholas Prowse, Master of the S. S. Virginia do solemnly, sincerely, and truly swear that the following List or Manifest, subscribed by me and now delivered by me to the Collector of the Customs of the Collection District of New York, is a full and perfect list of all the passengers taken on board the said S.S. Virginia at Liverpool and Queenstown from which port the said Virginia has now arrived; and that on said List is truly designated the age, the sex and the occupation of each of said passengers, the part of the vessel occupied by each during the passage, the country to which each belongs, and also the country of which it is intended by each to become an inhabitant; and that said List or Manifest truly sets forth the number of said passengers who have died on said voyage and the names and ages of those who died. Transcriber's Notes:
The "Location of compartment or space occupied" column was abbreviated by the transcriber.
After Main Steerage became Aft Main Steerage and Forward Main Steerage is listed as Fwd Main
Steerage. Forward Orlop is listed as Fwd Orlop
The original lister numbered the passengers, but began numbering again for the Cabin
passengers. This transcriber has continued the numbering consecutively. It seems at the
very end, he mis-numbered. The last actual Steerage passenger count was #1029 and #1030 is blank.
Thus, the actual passenger count is 1043.
An asterisk (*) is used to refer to an item in the transcriber's notes, which further explains
the entry.
A question mark (?) is used for letter/letters that cannot be read because of the quality of
the document. Where possible a suggestion is given in the Transcriber's Notes of what the
letter/letters may be.
A circumflex (^) is used to indicate missing letters in a name or word. The original lister
showed this by writing the final letter smaller and raising it above the line.
The "Country of origin" is listed as either England or America for the first 745 passengers.
Certainly, many of these passengers came from other countries, such as Prussia, Germany or
the Scandinavian countries. Starting with 746 to 1029 the lister showed the people as coming
from Ireland. It is presumed that these were those who boarded at Queenstown, Ireland.
The deaths on this ship were caused by cholera, the year 1866 having a serious outbreak of

789 It appears that the "Country from" is crossed out. It may be written in error.
797 Surname: Fode, Fede, Fade.
819 There is an "x" next to this passenger's name. It may be that he was ill on the voyage.
846 It is presumed that the surname for this passenger is Healy. Something was written and
crossed out. There are no dittoes, so this is just a presumption.
862 There is an "x" next to this passenger's name. It may be that he was ill on the voyage.
867 There is a double "s" on this name, but possibly this person is related to the above
passengers and the name is actually Burnes.
890 This passenger has a distinctly male name, but is listed as a female, spinster. Perhaps
the name is Eugenia?
905 There is an "x" next to this passenger's name. Perhaps she was ill on the voyage.
914 Scannell, Seannell.
948 There is an "x" next to this passsenger's name. Perhaps the boy was ill on the voyage.
Also, he is listed as a labourer, rather than the child that he is.
970-971 These names are written over each other. #970 may be Chippley. The "y" seems fairly
clear. It appears that for #971, Clifford was written over what had been there before.
981 This passenger has a distinctly feminine name, but is listed as a male, labourer.
988 Occupation: Rope Spinner.
996 This child is clearly listed as one-years old, but also as a Labourer.
1030-1031 This name is at a section where the document is wrinkled. The missing letters are
on the line, neither going above, nor below the line, except for the letter
before the "-ak", such letter going up and could be a "t", "k", "l" or such.
1041 It is assumed that this first name is actually the rank of Colonel.
