Transcriber's Notes:
* An asterisk indicates an error on the part of the original recorder, not the transcriber,
or is used to call your attention to additional information in the transcriber's notes.
? Indicates a letter or number which could not be determined due to the condition of the
manifest or handwriting of the original recorder.
^ A ^ followed by a letter indicates that the letter was superscripted.
* Passenger numbers assigned by transcriber for ease of reference.
* Occupations written vertically: labourers & farmers; but also written very lightly (for some
unknown reason) were specific occupations for some of the men.
* Country from where they came was written vertically as Germany and Switzerland, and all
intended to reside in the United States so these columns are not shown.
51 At end of this passengers line is written "4 children 12, 9, 5, 3", (presumably their ages).
We have no idea as to whether or not they were on board. Since other family's children are
listed I've decided not to list these.
53 At end of this passengers line is written "1 child 4 years". We have no idea as to what the
meaning of this might have been. It might mean that 1 four year old child died on board.
78-83 Numbers in ( ) after the surnames are numbers that were seen written very lightly in
this location on the manifest. The significance may be that these are more likely to be the
ages of the named passengers.
88 Written above the word "farmer" is "1 son". The significance is unknown but may mean that
he had one son who was not on board the ship.
106-109 Same as for 79 to 83.
Correspondence March 26, 2009 passengers #95-103 MENCH
Thank you very much for the great work provided us genealogists. It is greatly appreciated.
I believe my Mench ancestors were passengers 95 thru 103 from the Brig Mercure – Le Havre, France
to Philadelphia 1 August 1831. I believe Andrew Mench (passenger 95) died shortly after arrival because
his wife, Mary (passenger 96) remarried in 1836 in Hart's Sleeping Place, Cambria, PA.
I think Andrew Mench was born in Baden, Germany about 1801. His wife was Mary Ann Helbling.
One Census lists her from Germany and another from France?
I would be very interested in any information you have on the passengers as they boarded the ship
in France. Were there any records created that would help me locate the town or parish they came from
in France or Germany? Or any logs that would show their parents or families they left behind.
I look forward to hearing from you regarding any help you can provide to help me make this next step.
