Ship Description
The Steam Ship Leipzig was built in 1869 for the North German Lloyd of Bremen, so by
1873 it was already 4 years old. It was 290 feet long by 39 feet at midship. It had
a clipper bow and had two masts for sails used to save coal when the wind was favourable.
It had a single propeller which could generate 10 knots which meant the voyage took
about 28 days. Although there were cabin accommodations for 84 First Class and Second
Class passengers, these were unused on this voyage. Steerage could accommodate 600 but
with only the 294 aboard this voyage meant there was plenty of room.
