I, J H Gatjen, do solemnly, sincerely, and truly swear that the following list or Manifest of Passengers, subscribed with my name, and now delivered by me to the Collector of the Customs for the District of New-York, contains to the best of my knowledge and belief, a just and true account of all the Passengers received on board the Bremen Ship Elise whereof I am Master, from Bremen. Sworn to this October 30th 1850

   of the manifest or handwriting of the original recorder.

^  A ^ followed by a letter indicates that the letter was superscripted.

*  Names were transcribed as seen regardless of spelling.

*  None died during the voyage, therefore this coloumn was eliminated.


  4:       the last name could be Fressner or Feussner.
  6 & 7:   Lubben is spelled with u Umlaut.
 35:       first name illegible due to damaged manifest.
 46:       Lubbeke is spelled with u Umlaut.
 48:       Bohm is spelled with o Umlaut.
 49:       Age is guestionable due to having been overwritten, could be 19 or 29. 
           Muller is spelled with u Umlaut.
 52:       Muller is spelled with u Umlaut.
 61 & 62:  Muller is spelled with u Umlaut.
 65 - 68:  Haing is spelled with a Umlaut.
 68:       August was lined out and Georg entered beside it.
 69:       Tembrugge is spelled with u Umlaut.
 70:       the last name could be Fleet.
 72:       Hahne is spelled with a Umlaut.
 73:       Balleke is spelled with a Umlaut.
 76:       Letters in middle of town name were too light to read. 
           Ruter is spelled with u Umlaut.
 77:       Guterslohe is spelled with u Umlaut.
 79:       Bucheburg is spelled with u Umlaut on the first u. 
           The last name could be Wegwerth.
 87 - 92:  Konig is spelled with o Umlaut.
 90:       Age is unreadable due to defect in manifest.
 93:       Vodisch is spelled with o Umlaut.
 95:       Korner is spelled with o Umlaut.
104:       Turbringer is spelled with u Umlaut.
106 & 109: Sausen is spelled with a Umlaut.
118 & 119:  these three passengers are part of a big group of people
           who emigrated from the Munsterland (u Umlaut) area in Germany to the United
           States. They came from Burgsteinfurt. More information can be found at

145:       Luchow is spelled with u Umlaut.
146:       the last name could be Eissner.
147:       most of the information is illegible due to damage of the manifest.
148:       Many ink blots made some entries unreadable. Ditto marks show that 
           the following passengers are going to the same town as this passenger.
149:       Storker is spelled with o Umlaut.
155 & 156: bracketed with note: "one on the passage born child died." Osnabruck and 
           Muller are spelled with o Umlaut.
165:       Lowe is spelled with o Umlaut.
166 & 167: Ink blot prevented surnames from being read fully.
