was one of the more well known travel authors in Germany in the 19. century.
After his arrival in the New World, he travelled there extensively. In his book
"Streifzuege durch Amerika - 1837-1843" (Expeditions through America) he described
his passage on the Constitution and his adventures in the United States in detail.

Karl May, who was even more famous but who did not visit the United States
until later in life, copied quite a bit from Gerstacker's books. Karl May wrote
adventure stories about the Native Indians and the settlers. Some of his books,
loved by teenagers, are Winnetou I, II and III, Old Surehand and Old Shatterhand.
