Transcriber's Notes:

* An asterisk indicates an error on the part of the original recorder, not the transcriber,
or calls attention to additional information in the transcriber notes.

The pages on this film are not numbered so finding a particular ship can be difficult.
However, there is a system of numbering the manifests that is a part of the National
Archives file system on Chinese persons. These numbers are included in the identification
of the film and reel numbers below.

Many of the blanks at the top of this list were not completed. However, The the signature
of the Master identifies her as the Umatilla. The Umatilla sails from Victoria, B.C. and
Port Townsend, Washington. The arrival date appears on the cover sheet for the arrival
from Victoria. This, combined with the landed date for the passengers, means that this
list must be the same arrival as page one, the arrival from Victoria.

There are two separate pages for this arrival of this ship because Chinese passengers landed from
a foreign port and a U.S. port. There is different paperwork for the different types of arrivals.

There are two hand written notes.
I hereby certify that the above described Chinese have not been landed since leaving Port Townsend
   (signature) JC Hunter, Master
The above 4 Chinese landed this day by me.
(signature) J.C. Eager, Chinese Inspector, Dec 18, 1897

The following columns had no entries:
Physical Marks or Peculiarities and Facts of Identification
If accredited officers of Chinese Government, state facts

According to the National Archives branch in San Bruno, California it is possible that they have
some information on any Chinese passenger who arrived in San Francisco after 1886.
