Question marks replace illegible information or letters.

The pages on this film are not numbered so finding a particular ship can be difficult.
However, there is a system of numbering the manifests that is a part of the National
Archives file system on Chinese persons. These numbers are included in the identification
of the film and reel numbers below.

For passengers bound for San Francisco, passengers' names and ages are followed by a stamp
that varies depending on the disposition of the passenger.
Passengers allowed to land have the following stamp:
Landed Collectors order (blank with a month and day date written in) 1898 by Insp's (blank
for a name, in this case O'Leary).

Passengers not allowed to land have one of two different stamps:
Landing Refused Habeas Corpus U.S.D.C. Case followed by a number. These passengers were
probably allowed to land, but not to freely enter the country. The National Archives
should have a file for these passengers describing what happened to them.
Landing Refused Departed Per Steamer ______ (name of ship) _________ (date).

For passengers bound for a further port there are two possible dispositions:
Landed "I.T." Transit List followed by a number
Departed Per Steamer ______ (name of ship) _________ (date)

There are no numbers in the No of Certificate column.

Occupation is Grocer for all passengers except as noted below.

The following columns had no entries:
 Height
 Complexion
 Color of Eyes
Physical Marks or Peculiarities and Facts of Identification

San Benito is an island off the coast of Baja Cailfornia.

According to the National Archives branch in San Bruno, California it is possible that they
have some information on any Chinese passenger who arrived in San Francisco after 1886.

An Affidavit Merchant is a document created by the passenger before departing the US. It
is an affidavit signed by a number of white men in the town where the passenger resided in
the Us to prove that he is/was a merchant. A Sec 6 Certificate is a document to prove that
the passenger is/was a merchant but created in China.

There are a number of passengers listed as Return Laborer. When the Chinese Exclusion Act
was passed in 1882 a number of Chinese who had spent time in the US but had returned
to China at the time of the Act were excluded from returning to the US until 1894
 when the act was amended.

Numerical notations for passengers most likely are entries relating to later travel.
They can be interpreted by contacting Bill Green, the Chinese specialist at NARA
 in San Bruno, California.

2 22757/7-21 Self is written on the line
7 12217/19994 is written on the line.
9 13627/10-7 is written on the line.
11-15 It is difficult to interpret the No of Certificate column for these passengers.
For passenger 11 Chinese C is written in the space. On the next line,
under it, Residents card is written. Whether these notes refer to the individual
passengers individually or to both as Chinese Residents card is not clear.
There are other passengers with just Residents card entered. Further, there
are ditto marks for passengers 13-15. It is not clear whether the ditto marks
refer to Chinese residents card or to USCC as written for passenger 10.
Most of the entries in this column are, in fact, ditto marks.
13 Occupation is "to join her husband Woo Tai ?hicter."
16 Occupation is "with her husband Chung Tai Man."
17 Occupation is "with her mother #19."
23 Occupation is "with cousin Chang Sum."
26 Certificate No is Residents card.
28 Occupation is "with mother Ip Shing Yee #19."
30 Certificate No is Residents card.
33 Occupation is "with her husband Wong Seung #2."
