Transcriber's Notes:
* An asterisk indicates an error on the part of the original recorder not the transcriber,
or is used to call attention to additional information in the transcriber notes.
Question marks replace illegible information or letters.
The pages on this film are not numbered so finding a particular ship can be difficult.
However, there is a system of numbering the manifests that is a part of the National
Archives file system on Chinese persons. These numbers are included in the identification
of the film and reel numbers below.
The date of the Sworn Statement is January 17, but Jan 16 is written in above it. Jan 16 is
also the date on the cover sheet.
For passengers bound for San Francisco, passengers' names and ages are followed by a stamp
that varies depending on the disposition of the passenger.
Passengers allowed to land have the following stamp:
Landed Collectors order (blank with a month and day date written in) 1898 by Insp's (blank
for a name, in this case O'Leary).
Passengers not allowed to land have one of two different stamps:
Landing Refused Habeas Corpus U.S.D.C. Case followed by a number. These passengers were
probably allowed to land, but not to freely enter the country. The National Archives
should have a file for these passengers describing what happened to them.
Landing Refused Departed Per Steamer ______ (name of ship) _________ (date).
For passengers bound for a further port there are two possible dispositions:
Landed "I.T." Transit List followed by a number
Departed Per Steamer ______ (name of ship) _________ (date)
Occupation is Merchant fro all passengers except as noted below.
The blanks in the Last Residence column could have unrecognized ditto marks making the entry
the same as the one above.
The following columns had no entries:
Height
Complexion
Color of Eyes
Physical Marks or Peculiarities and Facts of Identification
An Affidavit Merchant is a document created by the passenger before departing the US. It
is an affidavit signed by a number of white men in the town where the passenger resided in
the Us to prove that he is/was a merchant. A Sec 6 Certificate is a document to prove that
the passenger is/was a merchant but created by the Chinese government in China.
There a a number of passengers with u or U as a name. It is difficult to tell whether it is
upper case or lower case. It usually has a diacritical mark above it that could be a caret,
a tilde or even an acute accent.
Numerical notations for passengers most likely are entries relating to later travel.
They can be interpreted by contacting Bill Green, the Chinese specialist at NARA
in San Bruno, California.
According to the National Archives branch in San Bruno, California it is possible that they
have some information on any Chinese passenger who arrived in San Francisco after 1886.
4 Second name is Han or Hun. Occupation is Salesman.
7 Occupation is with cousin. 12017/3031 is written on the line.
15 3227/4-1 is written on the line.
22 Occupation is son of Trader.

29 Occupation is illegible, could be nephew.

41 Occupation is Student.
42 Occupation is illegible, could be with her boy.
43-45 Occupation is child.
43 Age is written to the left of the usual column. Although it not explicitly stated that
she is female, there are other passengers otherwise identified as female who have this
same type of entry for age.
