So help me God. George S. Murray Master

Transcriber’s Notes:
The use of an * indicates an omission or error by the original recorder or is used to call
your attention to additional information in the Transcriber’s notes below.
The use of a ? indicates a word or letters that could not be read, due to the quality of the
original document.
A circumflex (^) is used to indicate missing letters in a name or word. The original preparer
showed this by writing the final letter smaller and raising it above the line.
There are slash marks on the manifest through the ages of children between the ages of 1 and
7 as if someone was counting this particular age range. It has the effect, however, of making
some ages illegible.
The transcriber has bracketed those travelling together as indicated by the baggage. The
first person in the party has the number of pieces of baggage ascribed to him/her and the
others simply have a bracket. It was found in this manifest that passengers were grouped
together even if one or more were assigned to a different location of the ship. They may also
have different surnames.
In order to conserve space, the column for the intended destinations of passengers has been
eliminated since all but fifteen of the 1029 passengers indicated that destination to be the
United States. The destinations for the remaining fifteen passengers are provided in the
notes that follow. Similarly, the column for the anticipated protracted sojourn in the
country has been eliminated, since all passengers indicated that they intended to stay in the
United States for a protracted period of time except for those fifteen transients.
Transcriber’s note on death codes: The Passenger Act of 1882 (22 Stat. L. 186, Chapter 374,
Sec. 9, August 2, 1882) required the master of a vessel to list both the date and cause of
death in manifests subsequent to that law. In the manifest above, the first number is the day
of the month that the individual died. When that number is 0, it is presumed that the date
was unknown. The second number relates to the cause of death. Finding the source for the
exact correlation between that number and a specific cause of death has been thus far
elusive. However, since 95 passengers died on this voyage, it is important to try to arrive
at a reasonable belief as to the reasons. Therefore, the following is presented: One year
after the passage of the Passenger Act, the French physician Jacques Bertillon introduced the
Bertillon Classification of Causes of Death. It was adopted by many countries rather quickly,
and by 1900 the first International Lists of Causes of Death, ICD-1, was released, based on
the list from Bertillon. If we use the numbers from that list and compare them to the numbers
in the present manifest, we find that 24 passengers died from unknown causes (code 0);
36 from small pox (Codes 1 to 3); 7 from cow pox (code 4); 4 from chicken pox (code 5);
3 from German measles (code 7); 2 from scarlet fever (code 8); 5 from typhus (code 9);
4 from plague (code 10); 2 from relapsing fever (code 11); 1 from influenza (code 12);
2 from whooping cough (code 13); 2 from mumps (code 14); and one each from pyrexia (code 17);
enteric fever (code 18); and Asiatic cholera (code 23).
Transcriber’s note on abbreviations: There were numerous abbreviations found in the manifest.
With given names, they are presented here as written without interpretation. With respect to
the other abbreviations, they are the following: In the Sworn Statement, Lipool for Liverpool
and Qstown for Queenstown. In the Age column, M for months (old) and W for weeks (old). In
the Calling column, lab for laborer; manuf and manuf^r for manufacturer; b’layer for
bricklayer; inft for infant; carp^r for carpenter; eng^r for engineer; r’man for railway man;
and m’chant for merchant. In the location of passengers column, top stge represents top
steerage.
660 The surname is somewhat unintelligible. However, it appears as given above.
676 The location of the passenger was “x”ed out. It isn’t clear if she was in 2nd Cabin.
687 The surname is somewhat unintelligible. However, it appears as given above.
700 The name and age are obliterated either from the microfilming or in the original manifest.
746-757 The ages are obliterated either from the microfilming or in the original manifest.
759-761 The ages are obliterated either from the microfilming or in the original manifest.
763-768 The ages are obliterated either from the microfilming or in the original manifest.
805 The surname is partially illegible. It could be Sistnares or Sistrares.
827-829 These passengers were designated as In Transit and had a final destination of Canada.
836 The surname is partially unclear. It could be Gaernlich or Gaemlich. The manifest cites
the occupation as Provision Dealer. It was intentionally abbreviated in order to conserve
space.
847 The second and third letters of the passenger’s occupation are not clear. If it is “dexter,”
he would be a dyer, but it appears more like “doster.”
883-884 These passengers were designated as In Transit but had a final destination of the
United States.
886 This passenger was designated as In Transit but had a final destination of the United
States.
887 This passenger was designated In Transit and had a final destination of Canada.
888 A “2” and a “1” are bracketed in the baggage column, suggesting that this passengers had
three bags total.
889 The surname is partially unclear. It appears to be Rivrellin.
901 This passenger was designated In Transit and had a final destination of Canada.
934-935 These passengers were designated as In Transit and had a final destination of Canada.
943-944 These passengers were designated as In Transit and had a final destination of Canada.
952 This passenger was designated In Transit and had a final destination of Bermuda.
996 The figures for date and cause of death are somewhat smudged and not perfectly aligned.
They could represent an unknown marking, but it is probable that they relate to death.
1020 The name is partially obliterated either from the microfilming or in the original manifest.
It appears that it might be Hackvatt. The age is obliterated.
