The New York
~ Genealogical and Biographical Society ~

  • The New York Genealogical and Biographical Society
    1. The Society maintains one of the principal genealogical reference libraries in the United States. The collection consists of more than 75,000 books, 1,300 periodicals, some 30,000 manuscripts, and nearly 22,000 microforms, as well as computer media.
    2. The library's major focus is New York State genealogy and local history. For New York's colonial period, the library's resources are unexcelled, and there are also impressive holdings for 19th and early 20th century New York State research, including    all of the available federal and state censuses.
    3. The manuscript collection in particular contains many unique materials on New York families.
    4. Other well represented areas include the New England states and New Jersey and core holdings for other states, and there is an extensive collection of reference books for beginning genealogists of every background.
