David Ruth and Katharine Strohm Diary This diary was written by David Ruth and his wife Katharine Strohm. It was a part of document called "History of the Ruth Family" and was translated from the German by David and Katharine's son Jacob Ernest Ruth. The Diary begins in 1819 with their experiences living at one of the Hofs at the Eichstock. It continues through their emigration to Iowa and then to Illinois where they joined the Summerfield Mennonite congregation. The description of the voyage across the Atlantic and the subsequent journey to Iowa includes the story of the death from Cholera of my great-great grandfather Johannes Lehmann while on the lake boat traveling from Buffalo, New York, to Toledo, Ohio. The diary ends in 1865 when the David Ruth family moved to Illinois. David Ruth died two years later in 1867. He is buried in the cemetery south of Summerfield, Illinois. I annotated the diary for my own benefit, but the notes may be of help to others who read the diary. |
