As a teenager, Bertha Starke left her parents, siblings and homeland, and took the long journey across the Atlantic, then half way across the country, to Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

This was part of a report given before a Parliamentary Committee, London in 1844 when conditions had, unbelievably, improved from the days of the first of the Swan River emigrants in Australia.
