NOVASCOTIAN, Halifax Feb.09, 1857, plate 2,c5 Steamer Savannah "TheFirst Atlantic Steamer" A great many disputes have occurred as to which was the first steamer that crossed the Atlantic and from which point she started. Subjoined as the facts: The first steamer that crossed the Atlantic was the Savannah of 350 tons which went from New York to Liverpool in 26 days. She left July 19, 1819. The Great Western from Bristol, and the Sirius from Cork, arrived at New York on the same day. June 17, 1838, being their first voyage in 18 days. The Unicorn, steamship, Capt. Walter Douglas, arrived at Halifax from Liverpool, very soon after the date last named. Golconda Of the German Emigrants, landed from the Golconda, a large number have been engaged by the Acadian Charcoal Iron Company, comprising, among them, many excellent tradesmen. About 60 of these men were sent off on Friday to the Company's works, at Londonderry and Nictau, which are now in active operation. The company agrees to give allotments of land and other privileges to these settlers. We understand that these men have been selected by two Officers of the British German Legion, one a regularly bred Mining Engineer, engaged by the Company who came out in the last November steamer.
