*Nony, Josef could be Nouy.
Interestingly enough this Passenger Manifest seemed to have all of the
nationalities in separate groups, as if the person taking the information,
and it is signed by the ship surgeon, chose the Bohemians one day, the Irish
another, etc. There were ten to twelve pages alone for the Irish immigrant
passengers. The pages that I was interested in had the names of passengers
who all stated that they were of Austrian nationality, and of the Bohemian
race or people. The occupations ranged from one smith , to several as
"laborer", and most of all were shown as "miner" or housewife. I expect
this means that there was a wave of immigrants who left Bohemia for the
mining communities in Illinois, and to meet people there who were their
sponsors...Bohemians from a preceding wave.
In doing research through the Cunard Lines archives in Great Britain, I
found that in 1904 the Carpathia was just two years old, having been
launched August of 1902, although its maiden voyage was not until May of
1903. This ship, according to the Cunard Line, was designed primarily for
the Hungarian emigrant service between Fiume, thence to Liverpool, and
finally the Port of New York. * "The accommodation was far superior to
anything previously offered to emigrants and the 3rd class accommodation was
of a good standard. There were also public rooms for 3rd class passengers
and all meals were included in the fare. In 1905 the passenger
accommodation was altered to accommodate 100 first class, 200 second class
and 2250 third class passengers. The final destination of this ship
September of 1904 was at the Port of New York, and not the Ellis Island
Center as for many other immigrants of the time. The SS Carpathia was to
figure in history and lore several years later, with the sinking of the ship
the Titanic. The Carpathia was the first rescue ship at the scene in 1912,
and responsible for the rescue of 703 passengers of the ill-fated Titanic.
"On July 17, 1918 the Carpathia was travelling in convoy, bound for Boston,
when it was struck by two torpedoes some 120 miles west of Fastnet. A third
torpedo hit the ship as the lifeboats were being manned. Five of the crew
were killed by the explosions. The remainder of the crew and the 57
passengers on board were safely rescued, and the Carpathia sank at 12:40
a.m. that day." *[see: www.liv.ac.uk/~archives/cunard/ships/carpath.htm]
The final U. S. destination for my ancestors was stated as French Village,
Illinois. This town can be located on a map, just south of Interstate 64
and East of highway 255 in St. Clair County. Nearby are the towns of East
St. Louis, Belleville and Swansea, all places named as being later points of
settlement for my Bohemian ancestors.
[Note, the bottom of the ship's manifest list, shows the following notation:
"Race or People is to be determined by the stock from which they sprang and
the language they speak. List of races will be found on the back of this
sheet." The notation at the bottom of the page, then appears to say in
pencil "Bohemia", which is what is noted under the Race or People column,
and after the column of Nationality. Bruch appears to be named as the last
place of residence, as this was the point of departure, and not the original
family hometown, from which they came.]
