Transcriber's Notes: You will note the Immigration Officer did not fill in the sworn statement at the beginning of the list. The original of this list was typed, not handwritten. You will see the list runs Number 1 through 30 and then the numbering starts over at number 1 and goes through 27. The spelling of these Spanish and Portuguese names is questionable in many cases. Garzia instead of Garcia, Gerro instead of Guerra or possibly Guerrero, Corre for possibly Correra. I checked several Spanish surname lists but they were no help. An asterisk indicates an error on the part of the original recorder not the transcriber. * 11 [the first # 11] this line was crossed out. * 17 [the first # 17] Juackin looks like a misspelling for Juaquin. * 18 [first # 18] Aviles, Hdefonso. The first name should probably be Ildefonso. * 22 [the first # 22] Castagna There is an ink splatter over the first three letters of this name. Also, below this name a rubber stamp was used and reads "???ISSUED 10/23/37 FOR Oakland OFFICE No. 25/998(25-65895) Lines 23 through line 8, Madiera is a possession of Portugal due east of Casablanca and north of the Canary Islands. Location: 32 50N, 17 0W in the Atlantic Ocean. 25 & 26 Frettas and Lopez, There is a rubber stamp "TAX" after their first names. The surname Frettas probably should be spelled Freitas. * 28 [the first # 28] Gonsalves The passenger is obviously female. * 1 [the second # 1] The list starts over here beginning with another citation and blank sworn statement. * 3 Gonslves, This is a continuation of the Gonsalves family. Last named misspelled. * 22 Bos, This passenger identified as a female. With the name Jose, I would assume he is male. Passengers 24,25,26,27 were written by hand. *26 Terwey, No first name. The recorder wrote "see 14" in the margin and "Born during voyage". *27 Bush, Recorder wrote "Stowaway" in margin. ?asinea could be Casinea. 1907 was originally written but crossed out and replaced by 1908. Listed as having entered Insular possession from Spain, but Spain is crossed out. The Captain did not sign the manifest. The inspector wrote in a note and signed at the bottom. Correspondence added July 6, 2006 - NOBRIGA I believe Manual Nobriga may have been my grandfather. My father, Adam Nobriga Brack, he was adopted after my grandfather died, was born in Hilo, Hawaii in 1912. As a kid my father told me that his father came from the Madeira Islands off of Portugal, and that we were Portuguese. George Brack
