Rich, do solemnly, sincerely and truly swear that the following List or Manifest of Passengers, subscribed with my name, and now delivered by me to the Collector of the Customs for the District of New York contains, to the best of my knowledge and belief, a just and true account of all the Passengers received on board the Ship Zurich whereof I am Master, from Havre. This transcriber's great grandfather, Johann Ruch, and his first
wife, Marie Meier, were passengers on the Zurich and may be found
near the end of this Passenger List. They were not from Switzerland
as shown on this list; they were both from the Vorarlberg region of
Austria. John Baptiste Ruch was born in Latz, a hamlet near Nenzing,
in 1823 and Anna Maria Mayer was born in Beschling, a hamlet also
near Nenzing, in 1825. When they emigrated, they traveled through
Switzerland, into France, to Le Havre, where they booked passage on
the Zurich. John Rauch was a school teacher and church organist and
taught in various German-speaking Catholic parochial schools in the
Midwestern United States from 1852 to 1884. His first wife,
Anna Mayer, died in Iowa in 1858; they had three children, only one
of whom survived childhood. He married his second wife, my great
grandmother, Sybilla Schmidt, an immigrant from Hofen, NW, Germany,
in 1860 in New Vienna, Iowa; they had at least 8 children, of whom 7
lived to maturity. John and Sybilla Rauch lived out their last years
on a farm in western Iowa, near Breda, Iowa; she died in 1912 and he
died a year and a half later.
