Transcriber's Notes:
Passenger numbers added to aid with referencing.
*****from the stars down on the list there is just a line in occupation
column, very few have an occupation written and then it is written
through the line.
(these + symbols are not part of the original manifest and have been
added by the transcriber.)
+ =part of James Willie Handcart Co. to Utah
++ =died crossing prairie to Utah
As I have several sources for these passengers, I have kept the
transcription of this manifest an actual copy of such. Below I have
endeavored to list other spellings of names as recorded on other sources.

John or Jonathan was written as Jno. Elizabeth was written with an
"e" as Elizebeth. At times names were abbreviated and the last letter
put above the rest of the name. I have put those abbreviations with
an apostrophe to denote the raised letter as in Sam'l for Samuel.
Also most surnames were recorded ending in "son" and yet several of
these are actually "sen" on other sources.

Many of this ships passengers were part of the ill-fated Willie Handcart
Company, one of the first companies crossing the plains to Utah that used
handcarts. From sixty, to some accounts of seventy-seven, people died on
the trip across the prairie. See notes on Page 2.
Correspondence 20 October 1999, passenger Rowley
Thanks to your good efforts, I was able to confirm that five of my
great great great grandparents, Ann Jewell Rowley, Samuel and
Eliza Chapman Gadd, and William and Jane James, and four of my great
great grandparents, John Rowley, Louisa Rowley, Mary Ann Gadd and
Emma James,(some on page 2) all came over on this ship and were indeed
part of the Willie Handcart Company. Your links to handcart sites
also provided me with personal insights into Ann Rowley and
Eliza Chapman Gadd as personal stories are told there about them.

Correspondence 23 April 2001, passengers Funnell
Mary Ann Funnell kept the Mission Home for the missionaries for
the LDS Church in Norwich, Norfolk, England. By the time she
and Elizabeth sailed on the Thornton she had buried her husband
Robert Funnell and seven of her children. Elizabeth was all she
had left. Yet at the age of 61 she walked most of the way across
the plains at least until the Willie Company could go no further.
She lived in Salt Lake City for several years until her death.

Correspondence 22 October 2001, passengers Martin/Carter
(Mary Ann) Stockdale Carter (Martin): Born: 6 March, 1805 in Penryn,
Cornwall, England. She married Edwin J. Carter in 1830. After their
sixth child was born Edwin died in an explosion at the quarry where
he was employed. During very hard times she cut her beautiful,
long hair and sold it to feed her family. She remarried to a Martin.
In 1854 the family embraced the gospel of the Church of Jesus Christ
of Latter-Day Saints. And two years later set out to America. After
arriving in the United States of America they stayed in New York
for a time. Her daughters left to head west in 1859. She stayed in
New York and two years later crossed the Plains into Utah. She died
in Stone, Oneida County, Idaho and was buried in the Stone,
Idaho/Snowville, Utah cemetery.
(Jane Carter) Harris Robbins: Born: February 16, 1840 in Prince Rock,
Devonshire, England. When she was two her father died in
an explosion at the quarry where he was employed. Her mother took
care of them until she remarried. When Jane was 14 the family
embraced the gospel of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints
and two years later they left to the United States. When they
arrived the stayed in New York for a time to earn money to head west.
While they were there she met William Morton Harris who was employed
as a printer. They soon married. Her younger sister Mary Ann also
married. In 1859 a call came out that all who wished to head
west should be ready to leave in two and a half hours. They
loaded up their handcart with provisions and set out west. At Chimney
Rock Jane became very ill, and the following day had a baby boy.
The family reached the Salt Lake Valley and stayed for awhile until
her husband called for her to come to the Curlew Valley where they
had decided to settle. The only building in the valley was the stage
station where a William Robbins lived. He was born in Canada, and
had served for the Union during the American Civil War. He had helped
build the railroad to Utah where the rails met and worked was called
of as far as building of the road went. He took a job as the manager
of a stage station in the Curlew Valley. He was the first settler of
the valley and had begun irrigating the valley. William Harris
soon died from complications caused by inhalation of white lead he
had indured while working in the printing offices. She soon remarried
to William Robbins. When her son Hulbert Bross Robbins was born he
was severely crippled. She fashioned a brace and he was able to walk
as early if not earlier than a normal child. Jane Carter Harris
Robbins died August 7, 1933 in Stone, Oneida County, Idaho after
illnesses that had lasted through most of her life, and was
buried in the Stone, Idaho/Snowville, Utah Cemetery at the age of 93.

Ship Thornton, at Sea off New York,
June 11, 1856
SIR: I must take the opportunity, ere we separate to express to you the high respect I entertain for the passengers (760 souls) on my ship, who are immediately under your guidance and direction, and to affirm that they are the finest body of emigrants I have ever had the pleasure to convey across the Atlantic--they have always been willing to do and act according to my wish, expressed by myself through you, and to render me any assistance that I have required from time to time.
All this I am sensible has arisen from you excellent management. I must also thank you for your assistance rendered to my officers, more especially to my surgeon, to whom you have lent your aid during his arduous duties; owing to this I cannot doubt much suffering has been alleviated.
And now, sir, as you are about to leave my ship in a few hours, allow me to express to you my best wishes and hopes that you will be enabled to reach your destination in perfect safety, and find all those near and dear to you in the enjoyment of perfect health--this I am sure will be sufficient reward for your four years of absence and toil in the cause. Please to express my good wishes to you counselors, Messrs. Atwood and Ahmonson, wishing them like success and happiness [-] yourself. My officers, I believe, share [-] me in the above and will sign after me.
Sir, Yours very respectfully,
Chas. Collins
