Transcriber's Notes:
* The use of an * indicates an omission or error made by the original
recorder.
* The use of a ? indicates a word or letter that could not be read, due to
quality of original document.
* Although the column "Age" is subdivided into years and months, there are
only a few instances where age in months is included. Rather than create
a separate column for half a dozen entries, these instances have been cited
in the notes below.
* The column "Died on the voyage" has been omitted. The sole entry in this
column is cited below.
* Page 3 of the manifest appears to be missing.
In three instances, "M.M." appears in the far left margin of the manifest.
* This notation appears to demarcate a change in cabin status. First cabin
begins with W. Fullam, second cabin with D. Leisgang, and third with Jean
Pierre Roh.
* While most passengers are listed in order of first name, last name, a few
are obviously in reverse order, and a few are questionable. These are
marked below.
* Almost all first names have been given French spellings or equivalents,
regardless of national origin, i.e., Jean, Edouard, Guillaume, etc.
* Many cities are given French spellings: Bale for Basel, Genova for Genoa,
Venise for Venice, Artsviller and Juviller for Arzweiler and Juweiler.
Most counties, however, are listed in English rather than French.
* French diacritical marks - circonflexe, accent aigu, accent grave, cedille
- are used extensively throughout the manifest. In the case of cities,
these are cited only the first time they appear.
* Most occupations are listed in English; however, those passengers having
no occupation are identified as "s/p" - that is, "sans profession."
* Titles are used inconsistently throughout the manifest. When included,
they are given variously as Mr. and M. (Monsieur), Mrs. and MMe. (Madame).
Miss is always used rather than Mlle. (Mademoiselle).
* The list is not numbered. There does seem to be a small dot or bullet
preceding many of the entries.
1 W. G. Dav??? - name could be Davach or Davad, possibly.
9-10 Liberti Gib and Vail L. Eugene - these two entries appear to be
written as first name, last name (as are the entries above and below
them) but the suspicion exists that these should be reversed.
9 Liberti Gib - circonflexe over first e in Genes; used consistently
throughout the manifest but cited only here.
15 Joaquina Ruiz - impossible to decipher age.
19 Mrs. Lansoy - "s/p" stands for "sans profession," or "without occupation
or profession; used consistently throughout the manifest but cited only
here.
20 Mme. Lanbier - circonflexe over the o in Saone; used consistently
throughout the manifest but cited only here.
24 Mrs. Adele Dutois - accent grave over first e in Adele.
33 Mrs. V? Rose Simon - ? appears to be a lower case n.
41 Samuel Decoster - crease in manifest makes age hard to decipher; age in
years column has only one integer, probably an 8 or 9; age in months
column is clearly 6.
42 Elise Decoster - age listed as 7 years, 6 months.
43 Jean Decoster - chunk missing from manifest; age in years is missing; age
in months is 9.
45 Alfred Jaciond - circonflexe over the a in Neufchatel; accented
inconsistently throughout the manifest.
52 Andre Chiara - accent aigue over e in Andre.
55-57 Line struck through entries for Cahn, Murphy and Cross. These three
entries appear in full on the first page of the manifest. Apparently
repeated in error, and crossed out when the duplication was discovered.
59 Sophie Perillard - accent aigu over e in Perillard.
72 Jean Chioro - name could be Chioso; difficult to distinguish between r
and s throughout the manifest.
81 Andre Casassa - accent aigu over e in Andre; this entry could also be
Cararra, because of difficulty noted above in distinguishing between r
and s on this manifest.
83-84 Line struck through Adele Dutois and Louis Dutois. These two entries
appear in full on the first page of the manifest. Apparently repeated
in error, and crossed out when the duplication was discovered.
86-88 Glattfelder - country of origin for all the Glattfelders is listed as
"Indianapolis, Switzerland."
101 Anna Muller - remainder of age obliterated by tear in manifest (chunk
missing).
104 Charles Epple - age obliterated by tear in manifest.
105 Mrs. Louise Epple - part of age obliterated by tear in manifest.
106 Theodore Stotler - accent aigu over first e in Theodore.
111 Balthasar Schiesser - abbreviation for Canton de Glarus (Canton of
Glarus), with an apparently misspelling of Glarus; Swiss cantons are
comparabel to French departments or U.S. counties.
115 Jules Kohler - impossible to decipher locality.
117 Louis Kireni - circonflexe over a in Bale.
121 Miss Seraphine Rudy is listed as a male.
123 Chretien Valais - no occupation listed.
126 Rodolphe Studler - unable to decipher second digit of age.
128 Mrs. Rosine Vordermann - remainder of age obliterated by crease/tear in
manifest.
129 Catherine Heer - age completely obliterated by crease/tear in manifest.
132 Elise Heer - age given as 11 months.
135 Jean J. Durst - unable to decipher age due to crease in paper; may be
19.
138 Francois Glarner - cedille on c of Francois
141 Francois Mohr - cedille on c of Francois
148 Frederic Affolter - accents aigu over first two e's of Frederic
152 Frida Schmid - circonflexe over a in Bale.
154 Miss Louise Kohler - age given as 2 years, 9 months; ditto marks
indicate that Louise is a servant, which is hardly likely at her age.
157 Philomene Oerseig - accent grave over first e in Philomene
Leonard Dierwaschter - accent aigu over e in Leonard
163 Jules Rochot - apparently minor misspelling of Canton of Vaud
169 Robert Rochot - age 5 years, 6 months
