SS City of Richmond
I, Robert Leitch, Master of the S. S. City of Richmond do solemnly, sincerely, and truly Swear that the following List or Manifest, subscribed by me, and now delivered by me to the Collector of the Customs of the Collections District of New York, is a full and perfect list of all the passengers taken on board the said SS City of Richmond at Liverpool Via Queenstown from which Port the said SS City of Richmond has now arrived; and that on the said list is truly designated the age, the sex, and the occupation of each of the said passengers, the part of the vessel occupied by each during the passage, the country to which each belongs, and also the country of which it is intended by each to become an inhabitant; and that said List or Manifest truly sets forth the number of said passengers who have died on said voyage, and the names and ages of those who have died. So help me God.

Transcribers Notes:
The use of an * indicates an omission or error made by the original recorder.
The use of a ? indicates a word or letters that could not be read, due to
the quality of the original document.
The person recording the passenger list had a good "hand", or penmanship.
Most of the English, Irish and American names were fairly clear. However,
the entries for some of the German, Italian and Swedish names seem to
indicate a translation problem on the part of the person taking and entering
the passenger names.
The Collector's name in the declaration is a scrawl that defies translation
and there are also initials just above the words List or Manifest. The
initials are also not legible.
No deaths were recorded. Therefore, the "Died on the Voyage" column has not
been included.
The given name Michael is spelled, everywhere in this list, Micheal or Michel.
The manifest scribe numbered the passengers but restarted with #1 with change
in Space Occupied. To aid with referencing, the passengers have been renumbered
sequentially.
Passengers, as per list number:
11 Holm Hansen - The Occupation is not legible. Since Holm is listed as
Female, not a Wife or Child, her occupation is probably Spinster.
16 M Pilot Jean Tembi may have been a ship's Pilot although his occupation
is shown as Laborer.
19 ?les Aug Saanquist - The first letter of the given name looks like an
incomplete capital K. The last name could also be Saarquist.
29 West Decom?? - the next to the last letter could be a b or an l and the
last letter may be a y.
47 Andrew Sene??? - the last three letters could be ble or lle.
50 Ellen Maltham - the surname may be Mattham.
69, 70, 71 R??tmore family - the missing letters are all above the line,
look like u or an i and e and a funny looking s. Possibly Rustmore?
73, 74, 75 Wence. family - this is the only surname in the Passenger List
followed by a period, thus indicating an abbreviation. The only time
names were abbreviated in this Passenger List was when they were very
long.
77 Delfaur Zue - surname could also be Zues. There may be another letter
or just a curlicue.
78 Pietro Hare?o - the missing letter is either g or z.
84, 85 Isabella and Dom Stegliana - The last letter is either a or o so
the surname could be Stegliano.
98 Paor? Bresci - Paor appears to be an unfinished name with only the P,
a, and o being legible. The r is only partly formed so the name may be
significantly shortened.
100 Caterina Allegrilla is the last passenger listed on one sheet and
101 Gior Allegiella's name leads off the next sheet, followed by 102,
Maria Allegiella. This would appear to be a family composed of mother
and two children but the spelling differs between 100 and 101.
However, there is a good chance the spelling isn't correct in either case.
118 - 124 the Me?tazke?i?z family. The first ? could be an n but the
line at the top of the loop is broken. The second ? is either an n or
possibly a double r. The third ? is either an a or an o.
136 C Aukesburgh - the age is shown as 211, which is an obvious error.
144 S Holdnberg could be a spelling error and the surname could be
Holdenberg.
160 Louis Ismay - in the Occupation column Laborer is overwritten
with Wire Puller, or vice-versa.
195 Thomas Anderson - There's a faint, small letter z between
Thomas and Anderson.
207 A?lo could be Aslo or Aelo.
219 Elizbth typed as shown.
225 Gugeaheim could be an attempt to spell Guggenheim.
229 Johanna Lieben is a female name yet the sex listed for this
person is M. Johanna should be Johann.
235 Ann is the only name and there are no ditto marks to indicate
her surname is the same as the preceding name.
244 Patk may be an abbreviation for Patrick since the surname is McGurrey.
Cabin Passengers
All males except 268 and 271 are shown with Gent as occupation. Gent would
appear to be an abbreviation for Gentleman.
Correspondence added 21 October 2006, passengers 170-180, Tierney
Passengers 170-179 are my GG Grandparents Stephen and Mary Bourke
Tierney and their children. They left Upperchurch, Co Tipperary, Ireland
in March 1879 and arrived at Stephen’s sister, Mrs. Margaret (Thomas)
Dougherty’s home in Monroe County Iowa in late April. They purchased a
farm located in Sec. 17, Cedar Township, Monroe Co. Iowa…the first land
they ever owned. They established themselves and raised their children.
Their last child, Stephen J., was born in this country in 1880. They
were later joined by Mary’s mother, Catharine Shanahan Bourke who arrived
from Ireland as well..Passenger 178, Margaret, is my Greatgrand Mother,
who married Isaac Christian Bingaman May 11,1896.
Their children were: James born 1898, John born 1900, Maurice born 1902,
my Grandmother, Mary Ann born 1904, Katie born 1906, Michael born 1910
and Florence born 1914. Stephen and Mary and son John are buried in St.
Mary’s Catholic Church, Weller Iowa.This is a predominately Irish Catholic
settlement that many immigrant families centered around.
Farmland was abundant and fertile and in the winter months many took work
in the coal mines of the area. I am very proud of my ancestors and am humbled
by their determination to have a better life in a far-away land.
