Correspondence: 2/00 Passengers # 104-107 Wigglesworth
Wigglesworth is a Yorkshire surname, but the family who settled in London
Township came from Co. Roscommon, Ireland. The Irish spelling of the surname is
Wigelsworth and the first generation kept that spelling. Those born in Canada
switched to 'Wigglesworth'. Because of the loss of Ireland's records in the fire
of 1922, it is impossible to know exactly how Anthony, Joshua and John
Wigelsworths were related to each other. Some time after these Wigelsworth men
settled in London Township, another relative from Roscommon, Joseph Wigelsworth,
arrived in the United States. Joseph settled in Lowndes County, Georgia.
In 1823, Anthony Wigelsworth (b. ca. 1796) held 20 acres in the townland of
Ballymartin Beg, parish of Roscommon, part of Ballintober South Barony and 2.2
acres in Cloughbrack in Kilbride Parish parish, also part of Ballintober South
Barony. This land was close to the town of Roscommon. Anthony married Kate (b.
ca 1796) and had a daughter, Mary b. 1839. By 1861, Anthony and his family were
in Canada. He and Kate had separated. Anthony was living at Joshua's farm in
London Township. Kate and their daughter, Mary, had moved to Bathurst Street in
the city of London, Ontario. Ten years later Anthony was a lodger at the home of
a neighbouring farmer. Anthony died in London Township Sept 1, 1874 of 'old age'
and was interred at Medway Cemetery. Kate died in London 16th Nov. 1877. Her
daughter, Mary (married name, Durkin) of 4 S.E. Hill Street, London reported her
death.
In 1834, Joshua Wigelsworth (b. ca 1805), another future Canadian, married
Elizabeth Ramsbotham in Co. Roscommon. They may have had other children but
Rebecca (b. 1836) and William (b. 1840) are the only ones who survived. In the
summer of 1843, Joshua age 30, farmer, Elizabeth age 27, Rebecca age 7 and John
Wigelsworth age 21, farmer, took the ferry to Liverpool where they found passage
on the Oswego. Their ship arrived at the Port of New York, 9 Sept of that year.
A question arises about how Joshua and Elizabeth's son William, age 3 yrs in
1843, got to Canada. Either he came on the Oswego as a stowaway or he was left
behind in Ireland to travel with Anthony and his family. The four Wigelsworths
trekked north into Canada and settled on lot 10 concession 11 in London Township
near Bryanston. Joshua and Elizabeth remained on that farm. Joshua's death
record has not been found. He was alive in 1881. His wife, Elizabeth Ramsbotham,
died Jan 13, 1893 in London Township. There is no further record in Canada of
their daughter, Rebecca, whose name appeared on the ship's passenger list.
Perhaps she died early or maybe she married someone in London Township. Their
son, William (b. 1840 in Ireland) married Elizabeth in London Twp ca. 1865 and
had two children before migrating to Hazleton, Shiawassee Co., Michigan, as
farmers. Some of William Wigelsworth's descendants live in Michigan today.
John Wigelsworth (b. 1823) travelled with Joshua from Ireland and lived in London
Township for a few years. In 1848 he married Scottish-born Mary Fisher (b.
1826) of London Township. They had daughters Elizabeth (b.12 Dec., 1848) and Ann
(b. 2 Dec., 1850) before John and his brother-in-law, Daniel Fisher each bought
50 acres of the w lot 23 conc 3, W. Nissouri Township on Feb 28, 1851. Mary
had eight more children, Mary (b. 1852), Rebecca (b. 1853), Joshua (b. 1858),
John (b. 1860), William (b. 1861), Christina Jane (1862), Robert (b.1866) and
Sarah (b. 1867). All but Joshua survived. John died 15 Dec., 1874 of heart
disease. He was 51. Mary Fisher Wigglesworth died 17 Feb., 1899 of the grippe.

Correspondence: 2/00 Passenger #121 Britton
JoAnne Gage Teske writes:
Ellen Britton married my great-grandfather, Charles M. Gage in
Binghamton, NY on November l5, 1858. Believe they left to homestead in
Winona, Winona County, MN shortly after their marriage. Had two sons in
Winona, Winona Co., MN: Charles Henry Gage born about 1859 and Albertus
(Albert) Warren Gage (my grandfather) born about 1864.
Passenger 120, Neale Britton, age 28, M, laborer, Ireland, USA may have
been her first husband or a relative. She lived in New York for 15
years before marrying my great-grandfather, so now will attempt to piece
together her life in that New York timeframe.

Correspondence 5/00 Passengers #126-134 Rooney
Rebecca Richardson sent the following information:
The manifest contains the names of the Rooney family--Elizabeth 49, and
eight children, one whom we are certain is my g-g-grandmother, Mary Rooney,
who was 12 at the time. Some of my older relatives have been researching
for years, and never knew when or how she came from Ireland. But her age
of 12 and the arrival date of 9/9/1843 means she was born in '30 or
'31, which is what we thought according to later census records. She married
John Gorman in 1851 in New York, had nine children who survived, (several had
large families) and now their descendents are many, mostly in Iowa, where
they settled, and where I am from. We are most grateful to you for
transcribing this list. Now I am looking to determine if Elizabeth was a
widow or wife who was coming to join her husband. So far I haven't found
any Rooney alone who would have come a year or two beforehand...but will keep
looking. Please link my e-mail address for anyone else who might be related
to one of these Rooneys; there have got to be a lot of relatives we never
knew about.
