Correspondence December 2, 2001 Passengers #76-78 DEMARTINI
In researching my DEMARTINI relatives from the village of Lorsica (which is near Chiavari, Italy), I found some (I'm fairly certain) in the list associated with the Brig Leonida, which departed from Genoa in 1854. Most of the passengers are described as coming from Chiavari, but I assume that this included smaller villages that are relatively close by (like Lorsica). In any event, several of the passengers have the surname BASIGALIEPO, and there is already a note on the page from an Italian genealogist commenting on how strange this name seems to be. I would like to suggest that it's a phonetic variant of "Baciagalupo" or Baciagalupi" - both of which are common in area to the northeast of Chiavari. Indeed, several of my Demartini ancestors in the San Francisco, California area (where I was born) had Baciagalupi relatives by marriage, and the Baciagalupo/i surname can still be found in the San Francisco phone book. Notes from a researcher, Arnaldo Borsa, added November 13, 2000
My name is Arnaldo Borsa and I am Italian. I was searching the Internet to know if someone of my ancestor's relative was emigrated to USA, because I found some Borsa living in USA in these days and I wanted to know if there is a possibility we have the same ancestors. I found this site with FHC #0175501 Record #1166 Transcribed by Carol Walker for The Immigrant Ships Transcribers Guild the 13 October 1998. I think I can be useful for some particulars; I noticed that often Italian names were changed, at the moment of the port immigrant registration, in English one and often they were mistyped. -Master: Guseppo B. Bardaee; the correct Italian given name is Giuseppe, the surname may be Bardace, while Bardaee is uncorrect. -Passenger #1: the correct given name is Stefano. -Passenger #2: the correct given name is Colomba. -Passenger #9: the correct given name is Agostina. -Passenger #19: the correct given name is Giacomo. -Passenger #56: the note say "Ge?olomo" so it must be Gerolomo, also if the most used version of the name is Gerolamo. -Passenger #101-105: the surname BAEIGSLUPO is very strange, I never heard of it and sounds "wrong" in Italian: I think it was bad typed during registration; I suppose the correct is BREGISLUPO, but I can't be sure. (See Below) -Passenger #106: the correct given name is Stefano. -Passenger #112-114: the surname GLI?ARDALLI should be GLIRARDALLI (other versions: GIRARDALLI or GIRARDELLI). As I said before, almost all the given name were translated in English, like Caroline for Carolina (Italian) and Ann for Anna and Louise for Luisa (or Luigia). If you need a translation of the given names, drop me a note. I'll be glad to help, if you need some. I hope to have been of some help for you and for the people who search their ancestors on those records. - Thank you, Arnaldo, from ISTG staff.
Correspondence added April 28, 2008 Passengers #101-105 BASIGALIEPO
Yes, the name is BACIAGALUPO. It is a common name in the Sturla River Valley, inland from Chiavari. Cuneo, Massa, Longinotti and Baciagalupo are all names found in the comune of Borzanasca which is something similar to a county seat. Also immigrants with those names all settled in Chicago from the 1850s to the 1920s. My grandmother, Rachele Castagnola, came from that area also. Bonnie Burns
