Transcriber's Notes:
* The above transcription of the Captain's List is as true to the original
as possible; misspellings and other apparent errors are intended to be as
written in the original.
* Handwriting on the Captain's List was often unclear, so interpretation was
assisted by referring to the "Quarterly Abstract of Passenger Lists of
Vessels Arriving at New Orleans, 1820-75". The Quarterly Abstract itself
is also transcribed and appended below.
* In subsequent notes, "Captain's List" may be abbreviated as "CL", and
"Quarterly Abstract" as "QA".
* Names are normally typed by the ISTG without diacritical markings, with
such markings described in accompanying footnotes. Unfortunately, the
Captain's List is much too bespeckled to identify umlauts and such with a
high degree of confidence. Where discernable, they are noted below.
However, the presence or absence of such a note should not be considered
authoritative. The QA contained no diacritical markings.
* There was no column or other information on the CL to indicate gender.
The QA did have a column for "Sex", but the unknown scribe largely
abstained from its use.
* Ages were noted in the CL in two adjacent columns, with a shared major
heading "Age" and subheadings "Grown" and "Children". Here, these two
columns are merged into one, except for the totals at the bottom of the
list: 74 adults and 42 children.
* Chest and Trunk quantities were listed in separate columns in the original.
Here, these two columns are combined into a single totaled column.
* There was one column on the original not included here. It followed the
Chests and Trunks columns and its heading was "Contents". The first entry
was "Wearing Apparel"; subsequent passengers' entries were ditto marks.
* There was no "Died" column or any other information on the original
Captain's List to indicate which of the passengers may have been the two
children who sadly died. Furthermore, all names listed on the CL also
appear on the Quarterly Abstract. Since the QA was definitely prepared
separately from the CL, and at the end of the voyage, it has to be assumed
that Captain Rothfos prepared his list at or near the end of the trip as
well, and simply did not list the names of the deceased children.
* Following are notes pertaining to individual entries in the above
Captain's List: (Also see separate notes on "Wherefrom", below.)
1 Blumenthal F G - Mr. Blumenthal's luggage was written out as
"2 Chests 1 Trunk 1 Packet".
2 Brinkwirth Theodor - Although Mr. Brinkwirth's occupation was clearly
written as "Brewer" in the CL (Captain's List, above), it was just as
clearly written "Mechanic" in the QA (Quarterly Abstract, below).
4 Kawling Therese - The writing of "Kawling" is smudged in the CL, but
is satisfactorily consistent with very clear writing in the QA.
6 Mohlenpage Joh Heinrich - Umlaut over the "o" in "Mohlenpage".
7 Hesse Chr Heinrich - Mr. Hesse's luggage was written out as
"1 Wallet". (For those of you under 75, the first definition given
by Mirriam-Webster for "wallet" is "1. a bag for carrying
miscellaneous articles while traveling".)
11 Buter Bernhard - Umlaut over the "u". Mr. Buter, listed in the CL
as having the occupation "Postillon", was noted in the QA as having
"No Occupation". (For those of you under 100, Mirriam-Webster
defines "postillion" as "one who rides as a guide on the near horse
of one of the pairs attached to a coach or post chaise especially
without a coachman".)
12 Mohlmann Ferdinand - Umlaut over the "o".
51 Baule Franziska - "Franziska" on CL, "Franciska" on QA.
74 Dorr Julius - Umlaut over the "o".
75 Block Gg Mich - Listed as "M G Block" in the QA. Later known as
George Frederick Block, he was an early settler of Port Neches,
Jefferson County, Texas, and the great-great-grandfather of this
transcriber.
76 Block Auguste - Second wife of passenger #75, George Block, and
great-great-grandmother of this transcriber.
77 Emilie Block - Daughter of #75, George Block, by his first wife.
78-82 Other children of #75 and #76, George and Augusta Block. Carl Block,
#79, later known as Charles Louis Block, is the great-grandfather of
this transcriber.
83 Wippernitz Ad Wwe - The lower case portion of "Wwe" is small, raised,
and underscored. This is an abbreviation for the German word "witwe",
or widow (of). She was almost certainly the mother-in-law of #75,
George Block, and great-great-great-grandmother of this transcriber.
In the 1850 U.S. Census of Jefferson County, Texas, she was listed as
Maria C. E. Wippenitz (sic). If anyone has ever encountered either
form of this surname, Wippernitz or Wippenitz, anywhere else in the
world, this transcriber would be most grateful to know about it.
90 Schunemann August - Umlaut over the "u" in Schunemann.
91 Knuppel August - Umlaut over the "u" in Knuppel.
104 Flother Heinrich - Umlaut over the "o".
105 Flother Christian - Umlaut over the "o".
106 Gobel Philipp - Umlaut over the "o".
113 Bultemann Elisabeth - Umlaut over the "u".
* If you locate a relative here, you will naturally be extremely interested
in the "Wherefrom" column on the Captain's List. Significantly, here were
listed city and village names. Unfortunately, the QA did not list these
locations -- only noting "Germany" as the Country of Origin for all
passengers -- making transcription more uncertain for "Wherefrom". To
assist in interpretation, place names were searched for using current and
older maps. Following are some detailed notes on "Wherefrom", referenced
by passenger number(s). Do not consider these notes conclusive; you
should conduct your own search.
1 Hamburg - Clearly written.
2-5 Burgsteinfurt - Clearly written. Current German locations with
similar names are Bergstein, Nordrhein-Westfalen, and Bergstedt,
neighborhood of Hamburg.
6 Drohne - There is a current location Drohne, Nordrhein-Westfalen.
There is also a Drohe (without the "n", notice), Niedersachsen.
7 Forste - Clearly written, but no apparent umlaut over the "o". There
is a current location Forste (with an umlaut over the "o"),
Niedersachsen. Other current locations with similar spellings
include: Forstel, Hessen; Fohrste (with "o" umlaut), Niedersachsen;
Forstern, Bayern; Forst, Baden-Wurttemberg; Forst, Brandenburg.
8 Bruchhausen - Current locations with this name include: Bruchhausen,
Baden-Wurttemberg; three locations named Bruchhausen,
Nordrhein-Westfalen; Bruchhausen-Vilsen, Niedersachsen, and the
neighborhood of Cologne, Nordrhein-Westfalen.
9-12 Meppen - There is a current German location Meppen, Niedersachsen.
13-16 Sieboldhausen - There are two locations in Niedersachsen with the
name Sieboldshausen (notice the added "s").
17 Hainbrunn - Current locations in Germany with similar names include
Hainbronn, Bayern; Ober Hainbrunn, Hessen; and Unter Hainbrunn,
Hessen.
18-19 Aurich - There are at least two current locations in Germany with
this precise spelling: Aurich, Niedersachsen, and Aurich,
Baden-Wurttemberg. Locations with similar spellings include Aurach,
Bayern, and two other locations in Bayern named Arrach.
20-24 Wiedelahe - There is a current location Wiedelah, Niedersachsen.
25-32 Vienenberg - There is a current location Vienenburg, Niedersachsen.
33-37 Wiedelahe - There is a current location Wiedelah, Niedersachsen.
38-42 Duhlenroth - Clearly written, but this precise spelling cannot be
located. May refer to Dudenroth, Rheinland-Pfalz, or to Dehlentrup,
Nordrhein-Westfalen.
43-57 Wulperode - Umlaut over the "u". May refer to either of the current
German locations Wolperode or Wulferode (with umlaut over the "u"),
both in Niedersachsen.
58-62 Dramfeld - There is a current German location Dramfeld, Niedersachsen.
63-68 Gr Bhuden - No current German place name of "Bhuden" or "Gross Bhuden"
could be located, but there are a number of current locations with
somewhat similar spellings.
69 Ellierode - There is a current German location Ellierode,
Niedersachsen.
70-72 Aurich Oldendorf - Distinctly written as two separate words. There
is no current location referred to by the name of Aurich Oldendorf.
There are at least two locations named Aurich. (See entry for 18-19
above.) As for Oldendorf, this may be the most common place name in
current Germany. There are at least 16 occurrences, with 10 of them
in Niedersachsen. There are even more locations with similar
spellings (Ollendorf, Oldendorp, and such). So, if you are trying to
locate the hometown of the Ellen family, good luck; however, there is
a promising possibility: one Oldendorf is within about 13 miles of
an Aurich, in Niedersachsen.
73 Lovensen - Umlaut over the "o". There is a current location named
Lowensen (with umlaut), Niedersachsen.
74 Eisenach - There is a current location Eisenach, Thuringen, and an
Eisenach, Rheinland-Pfalz.
75-91 Lassa? - Either "Lassau" or "Lassan". No current German location
named Lassau can be found. However, there is a location Lassan,
Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, in the area where the Block family is known
to have lived prior to immigrating. On some 19th century maps, this
location is labeled "Lassahn". This transcriber would appreciate any
information you may have about Lassau, Lassan, or Lassahn.
92-94 Westerup - There is no current German location of this exact
spelling; however, there are three locations spelled "Westrup" --
two in Niedersachsen and one in Nordrhein-Westfalen.
95- Sievershausen - There are three current locations named Sievershausen,
102 all in Niedersachsen.
103- Wilhelmshausen - There is a current location Wilhelmshausen,
107 Niedersachsen.
108- Sudlohne - With an umlaut over the "u". There is a current location
112 named Sudlohne (with "u" umlaut), Niedersachsen.
113 Schlewecke - There are two current locations named Schelwecke, both
in Niedersachsen.
114- Pl??ershausen - Smudged. Looks like "Pluhershausen" (with an umlaut
116 over the first "u"), but may be "Pliehershausen". No current
places with either spelling located. Closest spelling located may
be Pluderhausen (with first "u" umlaut), Baden-Wurttemberg.
There are other current locations that have somewhat similar
spellings.
The following list is transcribed from the "Quarterly Abstracts of Passenger Lists of Vessels Arriving at New Orleans, 1820-75", National Archives Microfilm Publications, Microcopy No. 272, Roll 3, October 6, 1845 - December 31, 1846.In the Quarterly Abstract, the entry for this voyage is dated June 1, 1846, rather than May 31, 1846. This is probably accounted for by May 31, 1846, having been a Sunday. This Quarterly Abstract is not simply a copy of the Captain's List. Names are in a different sequence, not alphabetical, but with family members still mostly clustered. There are some informative differences between the two lists.
Columns below represent:
First, a simple sequence number, not included in the original Quarterly Abstract but added here to assist in enumeration. Second, another column added by this transcriber which is the passenger number of this person as it appears on the Captain's List, above, to assist in cross-referencing the two lists.
Following these two transcriber's columns of numbers are Name, Age, Sex, and Occupation, as transcribed directly from the Quarterly Abstract.

This resolves an apparent count discrepancy between the two lists.
According to a spokesperson for Deutsches Schiffahrtsmuseum (German Maritime Museum) of Bremerhaven, this is the second of two barks named Constitution which were owned by H. H. Meier & Co of Bremen (later to become Norddeutscher Lloyd). The first, launched in 1820, was lost in 1833. This Constitution replaced her, was launched November 7, 1833, and carried immigrants for almost 25 years. She was about 90 feet long and 25 feet wide. No picture of this Constitution is known to exist.
Transcriber's personal note: * The Block and Wippernitz family on this voyage of the Constitution includes ancestors of this transcriber. Please let me know if you locate any of your family on this passage or otherwise find this transcription useful in your research. My e-mail link is below.
