Notes on the S.S. Canada, September 18, 1878
The first page of the Xeroxed manifest was creased at the center, causing
difficulty in transcribing the upper portion of the page. The upper
portions of most of the pages were also shadowed in black over the print,
but using a scanner to zoom in on these difficult areas proved most helpful.
The transcription format follows the Xerox copy of the original document.
Due to space limitations, there is one column that was not entered in the
transcription format, and that was the "Died on the voyage" column. This
column appears between the "The country in which they intend to inhabit"
and the "Class" columns. Let it be noted that no one died on this voyage,
as this column was not filled in or marked upon on any page of the Xeroxed
document.
In the column titled, "The country in which they intend to become
inhabitants," the logger had placed a squiggly line from the top of the page
to the bottom, which at times resembled the short-hand style of the word
"city." This appears several times, to the right of the words "New York"
and "Philadelphi."
In the "Age" column, the logger did not fill in the "months" column, but
only the year.
The column titled "The country to which they severally belong" contains
what appears to be the country of birth of each passenger. The logger
had placed a check mark to the left of each entry.
In some cases, there appears to be information added at a later date,
as it is in a different handwriting style. This information seems to
have been added to be more precise (i.e., "Alsace" was added above the
original entry of "Germany", and "Montreal" was added above the word
"Canada." I have transcribed both the towns and countries in these cases.
