I, J McMicken. Master of the S.S. Bothnia, do solemnly, sincerely, and truly swear that the following List or Manifest, subscribed by me,and now delivered by me to the Collector of the Customs of the Collection District of New York, is a full and perfect List of all the passengers taken on board of the said S.S.Bothnia at Liverpool, from which Port said Vessel has now arrived; and that on the said List is truly designated the age, the sex,and the occupation of each of the said Passengers, the part of the vessel occupied by each during the passage, the country to which each belongs and also the country of which it is intended by each to become an inhabitant; and that said List or Manifest truly sets forth the number of said Passengers who have died on said voyage, and the names and ages of those who have died. Transcriber's Notes
**The names were originally written with first name first; transcriber
erroneously reversed them so that they are last name first.
*An asterisk indicates an error on the part of the original recorder,
not the transcriber. The ? indicates letters or words that cannot be
read due to the quality of the original document. The "occupations"
which
are abbreviated as "spin" and "mat" probably indicate a "spinster"
(not a "spinner") or "matron".
2 Occupation really looks like "colonies"
12 First name looks like "Acid" or "Arid"
28 First name could be Bernt, Berud, or Berch. There is also a small
raised squiggle at the end, separate from the other letters, that
looks like a lower case "a". May signify an abbreviation.
36 Last name could be Deback, Debacks, Debacts, oor Debaets.
37 First four letters of last name seem to be Vaul, and all are connec-
ted. But they are followed by two small "o"s, that are close but not
connected to the preceding four letters, nor to each other: Vaul o o
39 First name may be Aris, Ans, Ars
45 Last name could be Recter, Reiter, or even Rester
50 Last name: first two letters Da, but cannot even be sure how many
letters
follow. May be as many as 7; third letter may be a "v".
59 First name looks like Hum, Him, Heni; last name looks like Neuman or
Newman
63 First name appears to be Benj, followed by a raised underlined
squiggle
(not legible). May well be an abbreviation for "Benjamin".
65 Occupation looks like "Spinner", but close observation shows last
three
letters are "ier".
71 Last name could be either Thilemann or Hilemann
76 Letters following "Geo" are separate, either "Jt" or "It"
91 First name may be abbreviation for "Benjamin", but second letter
looks more like "i" than "e". Followed by separate letters, either
"Jt" or "It".
94 Occupation may be "Florist", but second letter appears to be a
crossed "t".
105 First letter of last name appears to be a "C", but does not resemble
any other capital "C" or any other capital letter on this list.
Second
letter is definitely "a". Other letters open to many
interpretations.
The name might be "Cameron" or "Caveras". The middle name could be
Henry or Hendy.
109 Fourth and fifth letters of last name illegible.
111 Age: first numeral is a backwards "3"; second is definitely a "6".
129, 130: First letter of last name could be F or H
132 Last name could be Studary
133 Last three letters may be "son"
162 First name may be "Alison" or "Anson".
163 Occupation: fourth letter could be "g"; if so the word may possibly
be "surgeon".
