I looked up the 1834 SHIP ATTICA PASSENGER LIST microfilm and transcribed it for your web site.
My ancestors on the list are the Schlappi family(*). Christian, the
father--whose wife, Catharina Tritten, had died in Switzerland--immigrated
with his grown children from Lenk im Simmental, Bern, Switzerland.
A biographical account of the family, which is in my possession, tells
of a stormy 4 week passage to America. They arrived at NY Harbor
on the 4th of April. It's amazing to me that by May they had purchased
land at government prices in Western Ohio. I am a descendant of his
son, Samuel, and have done extensive research on the family.
Note by formatter: I have taken the liberty of listing each
individual separately on this list. Forwarded to the Guild, most
children were written all on one line.
Correspondence 11/20/02 passengers Fanconmier/Fauconnier
I am almost positive that the Family you have listed as FANCONMIER and
FRANCONMIER are my relatives. The correct spelling of that name is
FAUCONNIER. The date of arrival and the Fauconnier parents names along
with the childrens names all coincide with what I have found although
the ages of the children are off very slightly. Previous Fauconnier
family members were actually members of minor nobility. Supposedly,
Francois Fauconnier's father or grandfather had taken care of the Kings
hunt stables and trained the hunting falcons, thus his occupation listed
as blacksmith. The original family name was changed by the king to
better suit Francois's profession. (Falconer) The family changed their
name after arriving in PA to Vallimont or Valimont. One of the
Fauconnier also married a woman named Liegey. I see there is also a
family on the passenger list named Liege and I believe this might also
be a distant relative. Both families settled in Frenchville PA and took
up farming.
The only thing I have been able to find from France is a short clipping
stating he and his wife and five children had applied for emigration in
February 1834 which also is in line with the arrival date.
Bob Vallimont
Correspondence 03/02/2003 passenger Mason
My mother is Nancy Masson. I believe the Joseph Mason listed on the Attica
arriving in 1834 is Joseph Masson who is listed in the 1850 Mercer County,
PA census as the 36 m farmer married to Rebecca Masson and two sons
Francis L. 7m and Joseph E. 5m. I will try to get you some more info soon.
