administering the oath of allegiance. That list was written phonetically
and is included as "Alt. Spelling/Name" No boys under 16 were
included in this list (hence no alternate spelling). All passengers are from Rotterdam.

Correspondence March 11, 1999 passenger Stegel
"The name Johan Peter Stegel was spelled as Peter Stoeckel and as Peter Steckel in
all of the documents I have found on this family."
Lauri Steckel-Robinson

Correspondence September 20, 1999 passengers Herbold
"The last three people on the list, Paul, Hans and Jacob Herbold are ancestors.
Hans Herbold is in my direct line."

M. Harpold Correspondence September 18, 2002 passengers Lantz The LANTZ spelling of the name is from a shortened version of Lanzknecth also seen as Landsknecth. After the revolution we see the name in a variety of phonetic variations such as LANTS, LENTZ, LANS, and LANCE. There were three adult LANTZ males who arrived aboard the Bilander Thistle. They were three brothers with the fourth brother remaining in Speyer Bavaria. It's unknown how large the family was and the identity of the parents of the three men although some suggest the father as Andrus Lantz. The three men, Jacob, Michael, and Hans Peter who was later known as John Peter arrived with others. Jacob was born in "Germany" 1710 and is recorded as having only one son, also Jacob who was born in Sussex Co. NJ. Now only one son in those times make me think there were many other children not recorded. No wife is mentioned in Jacob Lantz's book. Michael, born in "Germany" in 1716 married after he arrived in America. Hans Peter was born in "Germany" in 1708 and had sons, John Nicholas who was 8 at the time of arrival, John whose age is not given, and John Peter who was 2 years of age. Now the curious thing is that in Jacob Lant'z 1931 book there is no mention of the name of Han's wife though we know there were women in the party. Here again too I suspect we only know of a portion of the family of Hans Peter as many familles were much larger than 3 children. Now as I recall from memory there was listed also Yohann Lantz who in Jacob Lantz's book is recorded as being born in 1733 and was said to have been "kidnapped in the Upper Rhine and brought over' This makes little sense to me. I can't imagine why anyone would kidnap a 5 year old and pay for passage to an unknown country and to arrive at the beginning of winter with said child. There is a DNA project that could answer the question of family line but until I see the results it is my suspicion that Yohann is part of the family and may be a son of Hans Peter or Jacob, as Michael did not have children upon arrival. Chambers writes in "Early Germans of New Jersey" of several females in the party but does not give relationships for them so we are left at guesswork. Still working on that one. I am in the last stages of proving a link between the three LANTZ brothers who arrived aboard the Bilander Thistle and my LANCE line. I look forward to any would like to write of ancestors and or family links. Laurence Lance Correspondence September 14, 2004 passenger Lilie The Ship list for Bilander Thistle Rotterdam to Philadelphia October 28,1738 contained what I think is my relative. JOHN GEORG LILIE or HUNDRICK LILLIE. I question his age of 22. But we shall see- I am glad to correspond on this.. P. Lilly
